With 2009 just around the corner, Bollywood stars are headed to different destinations to usher in the New Year. Since the mood in Mumbai is pretty glum after the November 26 terror attacks, most of the New Year performances in the city have been canceled. Moreover, even the stars who would normally stay put in Mumbai on Dec 31 are headed to exotic locales.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are on their way for a chilled out vacation in the Swiss Alps. Hope there are no bhel puri restaurants there to give Saif the stomach cramps. Akshay Kumar is already on a holiday with wife Twinkle Khanna, son Aarav and Dimple Kapadia and his mom Aruna. For them, the celebrations began on Dec 29 with Twinkle’s birthday and will continue till the January 1. Shilpa Shetty is on a vacation with her beau Raj Kundra in Spain. Alongside the duo are their respective families. Salman Khanalong with his brothers is in Goa for the New Years. The celebrations, low-key this year, began in the Khan household from Salman’s birthday on Dec 27 and will continue well into the first few days of January. Katrina Kaif has been in London for the Christmas reunion with her family and is expected to join Salman on 31st evening. Malaika Arora would be performing on stage at a hotel in Singapore, while Celina Jaitley will perform at the New Year bash at City Pavilion in London. Arjun Rampal, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and the rest of Rock On gang is headed to Dubai. They initially planned an outing in Goa but changed the plan after the government canceled outdoor parties. Shahrukh Khan is in Los Angeles to shoot Karan Johar’s film My Name Is Khan. He, Gauri and the kids are likely to fly to Uganda for a brief holiday. Kajol and Ajay Devgan have left for their farmhouse in Karjat. They are expected back on Jan 2 after which Kajol would fly to the US to shoot with SRK. John Abraham and Bipasha Basu will most likely head to Goa. Looks like they don’t mind if there aren’t any outdoor parties.

London (ANI): Popstar Britney Spears is reportedly dating Bollywood dance instructor Sandip Soparrkar, who choreographed her raunchy 'Womanizer' video. Apparently, the 27-year-old flew to Jodhpur for a romantic three-day Christmas break with Sandip who is a pin-up in his native India.
The couple has been dating for three weeks. The Mirror has learnt that the couple even exchanged homemade pressies under the tree. A source said: "It's early days but their romance is going from strength to strength. Britney and Sandip tried to keep their reunion in India hush-hush as they're determined to have a relationship just like any other couple.
"Sandip is very down to earth and keeps Britney grounded. He's also quite spiritual and sensitive, which is a side of him she adores. For Christmas, Sandip or Sandy as Britney calls him presented her with a traditional Indian sari. She wore it during a candlelit dinner. The pair were whispering and giggling all night. Sandy ordered local delicacies including chicken tikka and a cottage cheese curry. Britney was nicking the dough balls from his plate. It was really cute."Britney, who met Sandip at a party thrown by Madonna earlier this year, is spending the New Year back in Los Angeles.

Akshay Kumar is a loving husband, so what if he charges the poor producers 9 crores for a mere dubbing job even when the world economy is down in the dumps. Look what nice things he does with all the money. He pays heavy income tax to the Indian government and keeps his wife happy… Thats perhaps the greatest achievement for any Indian man - because these two things are literally impossible to achieve for many Indian men.
He decided to gift her a lavish Bentley Car worth 3 crore to his wifey dear on her birthday on 29th December. Apparently he spent so much for her because he was extremely proud of her and wanted to give her the best of everything because he owes his success to her.
Apparently he handed the car keys to his wife before he flew off to Hong Kong for Christmas Show. Twinkle was overwhelmed with joy we heard.

Akshay you are truly a KING....

A day just before the release of Ghajini, Aamir Khan went into great depression thinking about the future of his flick. In his blog entry, he wrote that he was suffering from prenatal depression and behaved like a zombie.

He writes, “The last 24 hours have been (the) most traumatic… I am emotionally totally drained just before any of my films release I go into a pendulum mode. One sec I feel very optimistic about the film and the next I’m sure no one’s going to like it. I lose my smile, my appetite (and) my sleep.”

“On the whole, I am listless and walk around like a zombie. VVC (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) accurately described it as prenatal depression. The film is about to be delivered and will be out of our systems so to speak. Then, it will have a life of its own which we have absolutely no control over.”

“It’s too tough making films. All the two years of planning, preparation, creative discussions, the struggle to shoot the film and the sleepless nights of post-production ultimately culminate in a three-hour experience in the darkness of a cinema hall.”

“(And) this time around it is a remake of a Tamil film, so I am especially anxious. ‘Ghajini’ was a huge success in the south and Surya (Sivakumar) had done an excellent job in the original. I hope that I have been able to do justice to the film.”

Well Ghajini’s 100% collections at the box-office must have surely vanished his depression.

The box office reviews say that Ghajini raked Rs.7 crores during 650 paid previews at multiplexes in India Wednesday. On Christmas, Ghajini’s worldwide box office collections peaked Rs. 32 crores in a single day! On the other hand Shahrukh Khan’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi made only 10 crores on its opening day as opposed to Ghajini’s 32 crores. Aamir Khan has beaten Shahrukh Khan at the Box Office. Ghajini undoubtedly is the biggest hit of 2008.

Ghajini is a powerful movie, sucking you into the violent and disturbing world of a man terribly wronged. It's a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat from the start and is replete with violence, even after three cuts by the censor board. True, the violent scenes come and go, but it's not the violence per se that is disturbing but the way it is portrayed - with plenty of blood and gore. Despite this the movie has managed to win a U/A certificate.

That said let me say that Ghajini is a well-made film with brilliant music by A.R Rahman. Yes, it's a three-hour masala film and kind of in your face, but then that is what we look forward to in Bollywood don't we! The director, A. R. Murugadoss has done a decent job, even though the story of the film seems to have been lifted from Memento, a film by Christopher Nolan. And Aamir's Hindi version is a remake of the Tamil one, which was also directed by Murugadoss. Everything about this movie, from the cinematography (Ravi K. Chandran), Editing (Anthony) and Art Direction (Samir Chanda) is above average. The fight scenes are the best I have seen in a Hindi film.

This year we've seen some big banner releases like Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Mere Baap Pehle Aap, Sarkar Raj, Bhoothnath, Tashan, U Me Aur Hum, Krazzy 4, Jodhaa Akbar, Jannat and Race. Unfortunately, only a handful have been successful at the box office. We take a look at the biggest hits of 2008, so far.

Race Trade analysts unanimously agree that Abbas-Mustan's Race was the top grosser of the year so far. There were a lot of things going for it. Race was a good thriller, with a lot of action and twist; the film starred stunning actresses like Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu and Sameera Reddy; and it had some of Pritam's best music. "It has been a very poor beginning for the year, as the industry has been slumping," Taran Adarsh, trade analyst, says. "The industry is in a critical condition. We have had a quantum of releases but unfortunately, most of them were flops. There were few hits." "The industry seems to have lost direction," Vinod Mirani, rediff.com's trade analyst tells us. "Creativity is nil. Most films are remakes of foreign movies and badly adapted. Local distributors, who dared to invest, lost money even if the producer did not."

Jannat Emraan Hashmi's Jannat came second on the hit list. Audiences seemed to love his boy-next-door appeal in the film. Besides, the film had a gripping second half, and a good climax. Pritam scored big on the music once again. "Only two films sustained: Race and Jannat," Mirani says. "Krazzy 4 did well too, despite having average content. They were feel-good, paisa vasool films." Taran Adarsh generously included more films in his hit list. "Race, Jannat, Jodhaa Akbar, Sarkar Raj and U Me Aur Hum were the only movies that did well because of their content and tight script," he said.

Jodhaa Akbar Ashutosh Gowariker's historical love story, Jodhaa Akbar, could not cash in on its big star cast: Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. One of the main drawbacks was the film's duration. If it could have been shortened by 30 minutes, it may have seen a better fate at the box office. Yet, the film can be listed in the top five hits of the year, thanks to the poor run of movies at the box office this year. "The industry this year has been worst than the last," Taran says. "The rise in inflation has increased ticket prices, so people don't want to buy a ticket worth Rs 200, only to watch a flop film like Haal-E-Dil, Khushboo and Jimmy."

Sarkar Raj Ram Gopal Varma seemed to want to revive his sinking career with Sarkar Raj, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The film had a good story, great performances and excellent cinematography by Amit Roy. And that seemed to work for the audience. "This year, movies flopped because of bad scripts and content," Adarsh says. "The biggest flop would be Tashan, which broke the all-time low record of Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. After that was Jimmy, the debut of Mithun Charkraborty's son Mimoh, and then, Kumar Mangat's daughter Amita Pathak's launch in Haal-E-Dil." Komal Nahta, trade analyst and editor of Film Information claims that there are many good films to watch out for this year like Pokhiri, Ghajini, Singh Is Kinng and Rab Ne Bana De Jodi.

Khuda Kay LiyeNo one expected Pakistani low-budget film, Khuda Kay Liye, to do well at the Indian box office. Even though the film did not feature big stars, it did quite well. So why have there been no big hits in 2008 yet? Are we missing the Khans on the marquee? "It's not because there was no Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan release." Adarsh explains. "If that was the case, we would not have had a hit in Jannat. Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman do not weave a magic wand. It is the film that works, the subject, music, treatment and emotions." "Movies like Aamir were critically acclaimed. But then, movies are made for masses, not for multiplex audience. And the masses want entertainment,' Komal Nahta concludes.

It is a Sweet, Enjoyable

Release Date : 12 December 2008

Aditya Chopra made his first movie, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in 1995, his second, Mohabbatein in 2000, and now, he finally comes up with his third directorial venture Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. His forte remains romance, just like his father Yash Chopra. His latest outing at the box office has all of the same elements and he uses his favorite actor Shah Rukh Khan, in the hope of unleashing the same fever that his earlier two films had done. But the times have changed. Somehow, in the last two weeks it seems as if people have aged nothing that Chopra or SRK could have forseen. Seen in the light of all that has happened in our environment, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, fails to rekindle the magic of love. It remains a nice, sweet film, with its moments, but cannot hope to aspire to greatness, something that one was expecting. Even though SRK plays an older man married to a much younger woman, there is not much that has changed. He is given an alter ego called Raj, who, as if, by proxy, does everything that SRK does in a movie all those goofy expressions, the hamming, the tongue in cheek, over the top characterization. It still reeks of SRK as we want to know him in most of his screen avatars. Where the love angle is concerned, one feels, that the actual moment, when the realization of love hits the character of Taani, played by Anushka Sharma, just doesn't arise from the given context but seems forced artificially from outside. There are hardly any signs in the film itself of Taani ever feeling more than grateful to Surendra Sahni. The process when a gratitude change to love is hardly clear in the movie. That, one feels, fails to raise the level of the movie. What should have been the moment of the movie is squandered with Chopra resorting to divine interpretation. Besides that one flaw, the film moves very smoothly and captures the small life and loves of Surendra Sahni very well. In fact, SRK really seems to get into the mood of things and makes the nondescript Surendra Sahani of Amritsar, a most loveable and endearing character. The story of this oddly matched couple caught in this loveless, boring marriage takes a turn for the unexpected when the wife, Taani, decides to enroll for dancing lessons from a bunch of teachers who have arrived straight from Mumbai. In the hope of getting an opportunity to see his wife happy and joyful, Surendra decides to change his attire off goes the boring hairstyle, the moustache, and the regular trousers and shirt. With the help of his childhood buddy, played by Vinay Pathak, the boring Sahni becomes the loud, swaggering Raj. His intention mainly was to watch his wife dance. But he is mistaken for one of the students and is forced to join the class. To his delight, he finds himself paired off with none other Taani. Thereby begins his second life, where he begins to woo his wife, makes her laugh, dances with her, and eats paanipuri galore with her, all under the guise of Raj. The problem arises when Taani actually falls in love with Raj and agrees to run away with him. For Sahni, it is important that Taani loves him and not his alter ego Raj. He desists from telling her truth as he wants her to make her choice. With a little bit of help from the Almighty, Taani realizes that she actually does love Surendra and decides against running away with Raj. Of course, Surendra and his wife go on to win the dancing competition and live happily ever after. The film is dominated by SRK and he does not disappoint. He is quite loveable as the boring husband as well as the swaggering Raj. Vinay Pathak, as his friend, turns in another seamless performance. The scene when the two friends get drunk is quite well done. Both actors seem to share a good chemistry. Some of the other enduring moments in the film take place when Surendra takes his wife to the movies, as even the scene when she comes to his office to give him his lunch. All these scenes are very well done and full credit to the director and the actors for that. There has been much speculation about new find Anushka Sharma. She is no beauty but has been presented very well in the movie. There is a certain girlish charm about her which goes very well with her character. Actually, she is perfectly suited to play the role of Taani, and turns in a very natural performance. Being a Yash Raj banner film, the production values are excellent as always. The music is peppy and very catchy, specially the song 'Haule haule.' Even the other tracks in the film go well with situations in the movie. This feel good film from the house of the Chopras may just break their recent jinx at the box office. In totality, the film is enjoyable in most parts because of SRK. But it remains a small, sweet film, with no aspirations to greatness.

Our film is a love story. A love triangle. But love triangles are boring. And love stories are dime a dozen. So what's unique about this story? The uniqueness is the Film Director's Abbas-Mustan and the production house Tips Films. Abbas-Mustan, the men in white, would never make a straight love story. Hence to say that our story is a romantic thriller, would be an under statement. Well coming back to the story, let us first tell you that it is based on the scenic locales of Dubai. A girl called Sophia (new find Urvashi Sharma), from the middle strata of society meets a guy called Karan (Bobby Deol), belonging to the upper echelon of society. Opposites attract. Hence Sophia falls in love with Karan and gets engaged to him. Comes guy No. 2 – Vicky (Akshaye Khanna); he belongs to the girl strata of society. Positives come close too. Hence, Sophia inspite of being engaged to Karan, starts falling for Vicky. So what's new about this story?? The girl – Sophia has a past that seems to be threatening her future… The guy – Vicky also has a past that can jeopardize the girl's future. And the rich guy Karan, too has a gruesome past, that will… if unleashed shatter all the three lives. Besides, to top it all, there is a fourth element to the story… a mysterious man… who seems to be monitoring all the three characters. Do you want to know more?? Well… you will have to watch it in the theatres.
It is too lethargic and Lax

Jumbo is the name of the protagonist of this animation film, which goes by the same name. He is a cute, loveable, baby elephant, who is in search of his father. That, in a nutshell, is the basic storyline of this animation flick. But there is just one problem with the film, it is not fun enough. Considering that the film is targeted at the kiddie audience, there is very little humour and even less fun moments in the film. Also, the coming of age plot has by now become quite hackneyed and done to death by more skilled filmmakers, like in the Lion King, for instance, still an all-time favourite with kids and adults alike. The hook for the film, is supposedly Akshay Kumar, Dimple Kapadia, Gulshan Grover and Rajpal Yadav's voiceover, but it is not enough to salvage the film. The animation quality of the movie, which has been made in Thailand, is quite refreshing and good. But the story line seems to suffer from antiquity. Also, the tale is not narrated with the sense of levity as it should have been. Unfortunately, the film is much too verbose for its target audience. Forget kids, even adults will find it boring after they have got over the cuteness of Jumbo, the protagonist. The story is about Jumbo, who goes out in search of his lost father but ends up losing his mother as well. But on the journey, he discovers love with a pink elephant called Sonia (Lara Dutta's voice). He also stumbles upon an exiled kingdom, which is ruled by a good king and joins his army as a warrior elephant. He then leads the army to battle with his arch enemy, a tusker called Bhaktavar (Grover). The coming –of-age-theme and the need to emerge a winner has definitely been inspired by Lion King. But unlike the latter, which had a lot of fun elements, Jumbo lacks the fun quotient. The film is more like a moral story liberally dishing it out about peace, brotherhood and family values. This preaching-from-the-pulpit attitude mars the movie. Just because the target audience is kids does not mean that makers have a field day preaching? Films are meant for entertainment and that should rightly be the first criterion. The star voices don't really add much to the film, except for the curiosity factor. The only voice which seems to stand out and actually elicits laughter, is that of Rajpal Yadav as a messenger bird. Besides being the voice of the protagonist, Akshay also appears for an item song which comes along with the film's credits. This film, which has been directed by Kompinn Kemgumnird, is too lethargic and lax. It fails to connect with its target audience.

Chak De India

Jo nahin ho sakta hai, wahi to karna hai...

Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality. The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India?

Mujhe sirfek mulk ka naam sunaai deta hai - India

The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible.Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can.Chak De India is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. A story to remind the nation of its National sport.
Maharathi is a refreshing film, in that it has an original story and screenplay. It is an adaptation of a famous Gujarati play written by Uttam Gada. It seems that actor Paresh Rawal was very keen to make it into a film, and is one of the driving forces behind this film. The other thing that Maharathi has going for it is its stellar cast. It has the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani in it, and they all are in fine form in the film. A thriller by genre, Maharathi has a very interesting plotline; the screenplay too seems to move well, except towards the end, which seems very hurried. The film does not wrap up very interestingly and thus in the final analysis, seems to lack punch. One of the best things about the film is that the audience is not privy to all the information, and thus it succeeds in giving a nice jolt now and then. In the hands of a more masterly director, it could have been quite a thriller. However, this is not to put down director Shivam Nair. The film's story revolves around Subhash (Paresh Rawal), a struggler, who has been trying to get into the movies for almost a decade. One night, he saves the life of a man, Mr Adenwalla (Naseer) and helps him back home. The very grateful Adenwalla hires him as his driver and actually feels very close to him, a fact which is resented by his young wife Mallika (Neha Dhupia). Subhash is well aware of this fact. Gradually, he manages to entrench himself in Adenwalla's house and heart. Adenwalla, a once famous filmmaker, who has fallen into hard times, is sick to death of his greedy wife. He hatches a plot and takes the ultimate revenge on her when he commits suicide in front of her and Subhash. He had insured his life for Rs 24 crore but she can only claim it if she can prove that his suicide is a murder. After Adenwalla's death, Subhash senses that fate has given him a chance to make something of his life. Hence, he plots with Mallika to prove that Adenwalla was murdered, with the understanding that they will share the loot equally. The duo decides to get a third person into the house so that they can have another witness. They enlist the help of Mr Adenwalla's lawyer, Merchant (Boman) in this and hire a caretaker (Tara Sharma). The plan is to keep up the pretence that Adenwalla is still alive, so that they have time to plot his so called ‘murder.' But things go haywire and Mallika is found dead. The cops enter the scene, along with ACP Gokhale (Om Puri) and the plot finally unravels. But Subhash manages to save himself, with the help of his wits and quick thinking. The plot, like we said, is very interesting. In fact, in parts, some of the film's sequences are quite brilliant, specially the ones featuring Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani. The actors are, of course, brilliant. And that is what saves the film. But there is a lot of confusion in the movie, especially in the final sequences when Subhash manages to save himself and implicate Merchant. Motives are not exactly clear. What is interesting, however, is the manner in which Subhash manages to wriggle out of the disaster.Since the movie moves at a very brisk pace, one somehow is not greatly bothered by it. But these questions do remain. The unraveling at the end of a thriller is very important. But Maharathi seems to stumble at this point. Also there is a sting in the tale, provided by Tara Sharma's character, but it is somehow not startling enough. A little wasted, one felt. The director could have paid a little more attention to the smaller details in the plot and the screenplay. Barring that, the film has good production values. The cinematography is good, without any unnecessary frills, unlike what one would expect in a typically shot Hindi thriller film. Even the background music is not overpowering. Nothing takes away from the action and the actors in Maharathi, no songs, nothing. Nair deserves kudos for that. There is a song in the end, but it comes only with the credits and seems more like a promotional number. Naseer's character is bumped of within the first half hour of the movie. But the master actor creates an impact with his charismatic presence. Om Puri is there for a very little while as well, but he too leaves an impact with his natural style of acting. The two are a study in contrasts, with Naseer being all flamboyance and Om, more earthy and natural. Neha Dhupia as the greedy wife is competent and so is Tara Sharma as the simple caretaker. The real acting honors in the film, however, are shared by Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani, both of who deliver seamless performances. Maharathi is an interesting film, well acted and replete with some brilliant oneliners by Paresh Rawal's character. It has almost everything going for it but lacks the ability to deliver a knockout punch at the box office.
Bool Bhulaiyaa is an exciting thriller-comedy film, the backdrop of the film revolves around a small village/town where people are very conservative and superstitious

Take a walk down its mean streets and one gets the essence of Mumbai; pause a while at one of its Traffic Signal and one gets the essence of life. In a day scores of people go past multitudes of Traffic Signal's scattered all over the city. People sitting in their vehicles impatiently wait to get going. Though this waiting lasts but a few minutes it feels like a lifetime to them.
However unknown to them there thrives an industry that derives its livelihood from these people waiting at the Traffic Signals. The work force of this industry is not less than that of an average sized multinational. It comprises of a gamut of people thrown in together by fate or hunger. There are oddities to the likes of eunuchs, handicapped and impaired beggars, lepers, street kids, drug addicts, and prostitutes, vendors selling flowers, fruits, sunscreens to sunglasses.
Yet it doesn't end there. There is an intriguing world lurking behind all the poverty seen at these traffic signals. Each signal is said to have a manager who collects a certain percentage of the day's revenue from each of those working at the signal. The pecking order broadens further and each manager is supposed to hand over his weekly collection to the person who is in charge of the region that covers a dozen or more signals. The ladder is raised in its hierarchy and the collector of each region deposits the money with the local Mafioso, (a local king pin) who then ensures that it reaches offshore to his master.
Traffic Signal is a story of one such signal, which is representative of all other signals around the city. Silsila a young orphan, who was born and who took his first tiny step at the signal is now its manager. For him the Signal is his workplace and a home where he lived. He's a sensitive soul with a heart of gold who considers the people like his family. He loves all those working at the signal, which in a way is his family but would spare nobody when it comes to business. He has a mentor, named Jaffar, who also is the collector of his region. Both he and Jaffar work for the local Mafioso, Haji and would even lay down their lives for him. Inherent in the social structure, lies a nexus between the local Mafia and Politicians, though at that level Silsila is almost nonexistent. Yet by a force of circumstance Silsila gets drawn into the bigger game and finds himself to be responsible for the annihilation of his own world, something to which he's dedicated his life. His deeds are irreversible and he would most certainly not be able to get things back to normal.
What would Silsila do in such a situation? Someone who had never hurt anybody in his lifetime. A person with a heart of gold who was left to fend for himself and the future of those who'd been devastated because of him. Silsila being a practical person knows that he can never take on Haji who is too powerful and way beyond him. Yet no matter what and how he has to get his life and the lives of his family at the Traffic Signal back on track how he gets around to do it is the summing up of the film Traffic Signal.
